Things to do
Walking
Walking is of course the most popular reasons to visit the beautiful Wasdale Valley. When we say we have walks from the door, they really are some of the best walks from the door in England. Number 1 being Scafell Pike - England’s highest peak but also the majestic Yewbarrow, Scafell, Great Gable, Kirk Fell…the list goes on. But there are also lots of lovely lower level walks where you can still take in the scenery and enjoy the fresh air and tranquillity.
Watersports
Being just yards from England’s deepest body of water, Wastwater, watersports are a popular activity. Guided canoeing sessions and stand up paddle boarding hire can be found by local businesses. In the summer, SUP hire can be obtained from Wasdale Youth Hostel.
Outdoor Activities
Local business West Lakes Adventure offer a variety of activities and hire services. Their qualified and experienced guides can offer ghyll scrambling, climbing, watersports, guided walks, canoeing and kayaking in Wasdale and nearby Eskdale.
Muncaster Castle
Historic Muncaster Castle is an award winning attraction near Ravenglass. Tour the castle, walk around the 72 acres of gardens, visit the hawk & owl centre, view the daily flying displays which will amaze, you’re sure to have a full day of enjoyment. They also have regular events and festivals including food and music.
Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway
This 7 mile route from Ravenglass to Dalegarth at Eskdale on a narrow gauge track is one of the most popular attractions in the Western Lake District. It is a way of seeing parts of the Western Lake District that can’t be seen either by walking or by car.
Beaches
Although we are situated in the Wasdale Valley with Scafell Pike and many other famous Lake District fells surrounding us, the hidden gem of the West Cumbria Coast is not far away. The beaches of Seascale and Drigg are well worth a visit when staying with us with Drigg being a Site of Special Scientific Interest and when parking there, look behind and view the valley and fells too. Seascale for ice creams and from both beaches, views of the Isle of Man.
